As we know, our bodies are super-complex and have a delicate balance of chemicals and processes occurring all the time. Broadly speaking, substances are either acidic or alkali and depending on what we eat, we can alter the levels of either one on our internal pH scales. So which one do our bodies like better?

These days, processed foods are more likely to contain acidic substances which could knock our body chemistry a little off-centre, which isn’t ideal for healthy cell production, repair and immunity. So that means we need more alkaline foods right? Correct! Of course naturally acidic foods such as fruit are still essential to our bodies as we need a balance, so if you are eating healthily, odds are you’re just fine. However, if you want to make sure your body isn’t taking a walk to the acid-side, here are some alkaline-rich foods for you to incorporate into your diet.

Salads and veggies!

Well, this should come as no surprise – greens are good! Foods such as asparagus, cucumbers, watercress, peas, beans, lettuce, sprouts, cabbage and other brassicas are all awesome sources of alkaline. Try to eat these regularly as they truly are nature’s wonder-foods and are absolutely packed with lovely natural vitamins and minerals.


Whilst these do contain citric acid, fruits can still be classified as alkalising because the natural sugars do not form acidic compounds! Why not munch down on lovely oranges, pineapples, mangoes, pears, apricots, avocados, blueberries and strawberries!


If you want to up your alkalinity and drink up the goodness, coconut yoghurt, almond milk and herbal teas can help balance out your pH levels. Fruits and vegetable smoothies are also great, so feel free to combine carrots, celery, cucumber, bananas, coconuts and watermelons. Be careful though as some drinks such as processed fruit juice, tea and coffee have high acid levels, so stick to natural sources whenever possible.!

Things to avoid

It turns out that processed foods with concentrated sources of starch and protein contain a lot more acid producing elements. Try to reduce the levels of commercial grains and refined sugars in your diets by avoiding unhealthy snacks such as white breads, cakes, pastries and sugary breakfast cereals.

The alkalinity of our blood is what puts our bodies in a state of wellbeing, so try to aim to have around 75% of your daily food intake as alkaline forming to help neutralise any excess acids in your diet.
